Dame Dorothy Tangney | First Western Australian Senator

Come and join us to hear from Maxine Muir of the Tangney Trust, speaking about her aunt Dame Dorothy Tangney.

International Women’s Day was celebrated on the 8th of March.

Western Australia can be proud of two first’s to momentarily break the glass ceiling.  In these cases, the parliamentary ceiling!
First Women in an Australian Parliament and second in the world, Edith Dirksey Cowan 1921.
First Woman in the Australian Senate Dorothy Tangney, 1943 and serving continuously for twenty-five years to 1967.

A Freo girl who eventually became a Dame, Dame Dorothy served on numerous committees particularly education and social policy.  She was the Labor Party’s only female parliamentarian throughout all of her years of service.  Her niece and biographer, Maxine Muir will be giving Perth Rotary the drum on Aunty Dot.
