Hollywood Gets Ready to Invade the Wild West

After decades of wishing and hoping Perth is about to get a world-class movie studio. Located in Whiteman Park in Perth’s northern suburbs, the Perth Film Studios will welcome its first production in the middle of 2026, kicking off what is hoped will be a steady stream of movies and television series from around Australia and the world and justifying the state government’s $200 million-plus investment. But will it work? Will streamers and production houses in the United States and around the world travel all the way to Perth to make a movie? What happens when the Australian dollar drops? Will the local industry benefit from foreign filmmakers making movies and series for international consumption? Will they even get a look in?
Our guest today, MARK NAGLAZAS, is a veteran film critic and journalist who has spent most of his professional career reporting on the machinations of the screen industry in Western Australia, Australia and overseas. Mark wrote a series of award-winning articles about the first iteration of the studios on Victoria Quay in Fremantle. He has followed the story closely, recently talking to Howard Cearns of Homefire, the consortium he formed with developer Adrian Fini, who is overseeing the build of the studio.
