Dear Rotarians and friends,

Get ready for an exciting fortnight culminating in World Polio Day on Friday, 24 October 2025. This is our time to recognize the incredible progress we've made in the fight to eradicate polio and focus on the final steps.

Rotarians have two fantastic opportunities to celebrate and raise crucial awareness:

1. Ride the Train for Polio Awareness (8:00 am – 6:00 pm)

Join Rotarians across District 9423 in raising awareness by riding the WA Railway Network. Wear your "End Polio Now" red Polio T-shirt (or any Rotary shirt) anytime between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. This is a simple, high-visibility way to promote our cause in the public domain.

  • Action: This is a free event, but you must register for insurance coverage.

  •   Register here

2. Attend the World Polio Day Liquid Gold Dinner

Why not Make a Day of It? Ride the trains during the day, then join us for a celebratory dinner at the Royal Perth Golf Club to exchange stories and cement our commitment!

Our Guest Speaker is Renee Kennedy, an acclaimed film and television producer. Renee is currently producing a feature film adaptation of Joan London's novel, The Golden Age, which is set in a 1950s Perth children's convalescent home during the polio epidemic. Her talk will compellingly connect this poignant post-war narrative to Rotary's ongoing mission.

  • Action: Book your seat and join me in working together to eradicate this dreadful disease.

Let's make a real impact on World Polio Day!

ROTARIANS Celebrated this week....

Running for Impact & Fighting Modern Slavery

We have some outstanding achievements to celebrate from our members:

  • Marathon Man: Congratulations to Immediate Past President Manu Gupta, who completed yet another full marathon! Manu successfully ran the Melbourne Marathon in a time of 4 hours and 29 minutes. He reported "near-perfect" running conditions—not too hot, not too wet—just right for the achievement!

  • Fighting Modern Slavery: A huge thank you to Past President Wesley Sim for successfully raising $14,000 as part of the Uniting Church's Pong-a-thon! These vital funds will go towards the fight against Modern Day Slavery.

What is Modern Day Slavery? It is an umbrella term covering practices like human trafficking, forced labour, forced marriage, and the worst forms of child labour. It involves the use of coercion, threats, or deception to exploit individuals, often vulnerable children, for personal or commercial gain, stripping them of their freedom of choice. Thank you, Wesley, for your incredible support in combating this terrible scourge on our modern world.

President’s Update & Good News Callout

I am currently attending the Marshall Centre Community Engagement Event to learn more about the important work happening within the centre. I look forward to sharing a detailed update with all members in the next newsletter.

Do you have a Good News Story? We want to hear about your community service, personal achievements, or Rotary projects! Please share your story and photos with our community by emailing president@rotaryperth.org.au to be featured in our fortnightly newsletter.

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Update

Our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Elliot Notelaers, is back in action!

Elliot recently attended the RYE Briefing Weekend and returns to school for Term 4 on Tuesday, 14 October 2025. He had a restful holiday break, which included catching up with friends for soccer, experiencing caviar for the first time at a High Tea, and a quick trip to Mandurah to visit the Giants sculptures.

Host Families Needed! We encourage all members to invite Elliot to your homes for a meal or include him in a family activity when the opportunity arises. It’s a fantastic way to enrich his cultural experience in Perth!
