On Friday, 3 July the first of Perth Rotary's Centenary year lunches took place when Past President David Reed OAM hosted the Vinnies WA team. The focus of this event was the Passages Youth Engagement Hubs.
We began by farewelling our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Elliot Notelaers. He'd enjoyed a year with our Perth Rotary family, and was now looking forward to being united with his own family at home in Belgium.
David, who was the founder and inaugural chair of Passages, kicked off the formal presentation with providing attendees with a little of the history of the project. He shared what inspired him to bring up the idea in 1998, put together the joint venture partners and create what is a truly unique service.
Guests then heard first hand from the Vinnies team; Chrissie Smith, Jade Gillespie and Aimee Robinson. They provided a wonderful overview of the services and described a little about the Compass program which supports young people who suffer persistent and significant disadvantage. Deepening the impact of their presentation, they shared a number of testimonials from young people whose lives have been changed for the better through the support of Passages.
From the manner in which these three ladies spoke, it was so clear that they are truly committed to helping homeless youth. As well they are committed to ensuring that Passages continues to provide the essential services that it has become renowned for.
Our very own Reverend John ran an entertaining Sergeant session, raising funds to donate to Passages to help them keep up their good work.
All in all it was a very successful lunch. Past Present David did a pretty good job as Chair, considering that it was 29 years since he last did so.
