Members & Friends of the Perth Rotary Club,

The Silly Season has arrived and my diary is in overdrive.

This Friday is a very important meeting for our club members to attend as we finalise the 2020/21 and beyond Strategic Plan.  I invite all members to please join us at The Westin Hotel for lunch, Friday 20 November.  We also have the pleasure of Rohan Zakharia, Vienna Pops 2020 Rising Star and New England Conservatory Scholar as our guest performer.
Rohan is fresh out of high School, graduated from Hale School 2019 and was the successful winner of the 2020 Dean's Scholarship of Merit, Bachelor's Programe for Percussion Performance at New England Conservatory (NEC), Boston.  He leaves for America in January 2021 to commence his tertiary education.

Rohan comes to us as a highly recommended and lauded young musician and his performance this Friday will be something not to be missed.  New England Conservatory (NEC) is one of the world’s leading musical institutions, that prepares its students for subsequent careers as internationally renowned performers.  To date, Rohan has been under the tutelage and mentorship of Joel Bass and Brian Maloney (Principal Percussionist of WASO).  Most recently Rohan was the Principal Percussionist in the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Young Symphonists’ Program, Australia’s leading institution for emerging musicians.

We are so blessed that we are able to play a small role in promoting and assisting our youth to follow their dreams.

Last week we welcomed the US Consul General, Mr David J Gainer to the Perth Rotary Club as our guest speaker.  It was a very warm and friendly meeting with Australia's trading partner and ally.  Mr Gainer hi-lighted not only the trade relations but the under utilised opportunities for Australian Youth to travel to America and work.   It was also a pleasure to induct Maree and Sagar as the worlds newest Rotariarns, however, they won't keep that title for long as this week we are looking forward to welcoming Eileen Hao to the club.

Past President David Reed nominated Eileen as a member of Perth Rotary.  Eileen is already well known to many in the club and has been busy volunteering with Greenbatch, Kimberly Dental Team, Perth Rotaract Club and the Joondalup Rotary Club at the  Mullaloo Beach Clean Up.

Eileen Hao has more than 25 years working experience on industrial minerals, metals and applications, including 15 years with ECC International (English China Clays) and Imerys Group, one of the world largest multi-national industrial mineral processing company, as the Group’s China Project Manager then China Commercial Manager, responsible for establishing projects, investment for ECC and Imerys in China, as well as Imerys product sales, marketing and business development. She was the core Senior Consultant of Roskill Consultancy Group, the world leading information and consultancy company based in London, UK.

She has been working as key advisor and deeply involved in successful developing several world-class mining and mineral processing projects worldwide, covering many different kinds of minerals and metals, specialised on lithium, VTM, nickel and cobalt, mineral sand, kaolin, graphite, zirconium, titanium, vanadium, bauxite, rare earths and battery materials.

Since the beginning of 2010, Eileen has been working with Reed Resources and Neometals as the company’s Business Development Manager and General Manager China, successfully introduced Neometals into China market, and helped Neometals on establishing the joint venture with Ganfeng Lithium on Mt Marion lithium project, one of the largest lithium compound producer in the world.

Eileen has degrees and strong technical background on chemistry, geology and material engineering. She is the key expert in China and worldwide on battery minerals and metals, battery materials and industrial minerals.  We look forward to welcoming Eileen, Friday 20 November 2020.

This week is the festival of Diwali and we wish all Rotarians, but particularly Manu and Nitin Happy Diwali.  Diwali is called the Festival of Lights, celebrated Saturday 14 November in honour of Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu).   After many years of exile, Rama returned to his people, fought a great battle against the demon king Ravana and won.   Diwali is a joyous festival celebrated with all homes, business and streets lighting up, hence the Festival of Lights.  The festival lasts for five days and is widely celebrated not only in India but throughout the world.

We are looking forward to Steeltoes and Stilettos, an event that Jo Morris and the Reflections through Reality Team have been working on for several months now.  They have a great team of Tradies lined up to walk the runway and looking forward to reaching their fundraising targets.  If you have not yet secured your ticket to attend this event, please contact Jo Morris direct - fellowship@rotaryperth.org.au.

Saturday 21 Nov - Steeltoes & Stilettos - is a building and construction industry event bringing the risk of asbestos to the big stage. Tradies are dobbed in and sponsored to walk the catwalk with a model.  Reflections, a not-for-profit which is working to reduce the impact of asbestos on our community, is offering you the opportunity to join us in bringing this landmark event to life. With the highest rates of the asbestos-related terminal cancer, Mesothelioma, in the world and significant amounts of in-situ asbestos in our built environment, asbestos has left a devastating legacy in Western Australia. Raising awareness in the building and construction industry is crucial, and this unique event also spreads the message to the wider community.

Tickets include a red-carpet entry, canapes, drinks and live entertainment.   Early bird tickets are on sale for a limited time.
