Members & Friends of the Perth Rotary Club,

Last night the Membership Committee hosted a ‘New Members Evening’ at the Perth Rotary CBD Office.  It was a fabulous turn out of Rotarians, all of whom are exemplars of various stages and lengths of service to the community in which we live.  Central to new member engagement is fostering a sense of belonging within our club.  The buzz around the room and genuine conversations and exchange of ideas was wonderful to hear and see.  Our aim is to engage, serve and positively impact the community in which we live, work and play.

We look forward to welcoming five new members to the club during November and I urge existing members to make them feel welcome in the weeks and months ahead.   Our new members joining the club - Nick Rapos; Eileen Hao; Maree Gooch; Sagar Badve & Riaz Mahmood

At the 75th Birthday celebrations for the UNAAWA I had the great pleasure of meeting Past President Maureen McDaniel.  Maureen was the first female president of the Perth Rotary Club and still as joyful, energetic and enthusiastic as ever.  Although Maureen has ‘retired’ to the south west of WA, she appears to be busier than ever.  It was such a privilege to meet Maureen and I am looking forward to catching up again in the near future.

It was also a delight to see Perth Rotary Corporate Member, Magic Coat be awarded ‘The UNAAWA Human Rights Award 2020’.  Congratulations to Di Wilcox and her team at Magic Coat and Make A Difference Foundation who work so hard to ensure that our youngest members of society are equipped with the tools they need to cope with the many stresses of today’s world.  Magic Coat is about creating Confident, Caring and Calm Kids.

It may seem on first glance that Perth Rotary hosts an awful lot of events, however, They are Events With Purpose!  November seems to be the gateway month into the “Silly Season” and it is easy for our diary’s to become inundated with events, meetings, lunches and more….

  • Saturday 21 Nov  Steeltoes & Stilettos - is a building and construction industry event bringing the risk of asbestos to the big stage. Tradies are dobbed in and sponsored to walk the catwalk with a model.  Reflections, a not-for-profit which is working to reduce the impact of asbestos on our community, is offering you the opportunity to join us in bringing this landmark event to life. With the highest rates of the asbestos-related terminal cancer, Mesothelioma, in the world and significant amounts of in-situ asbestos in our built environment, asbestos has left a devastating legacy in Western Australia. Raising awareness in the building and construction industry is crucial, and this unique event also spreads the message to the wider community.
  • Tickets include a red-carpet entry, canapes, drinks and live entertainment.   Early bird tickets are on sale for a limited time.
  • Thursday 26 Nov - The Brave Shave – Word is out!  President Jill, along with Past Presidents Wes and Larry, and ROC President Karin and ROC Members Shane and Blake, have committed to the Brave Shave!   On November 26, you’re invited to take part in an event that will impact pioneering WA cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.  The aim is to raise $100,000 to boost a cancer breakthrough, join us and the team in making a difference for friends and family facing cancer. You don’t have to shave your head, just  provide financial and emotional support to someone who is! Your donation is helping keep families together for longer, Your presence at the event is giving us courage to go ahead with the shave.  Nanook (Larry's dog) is also joining us via video as he shaves his winter coat ready for summer.

Can you Help?? The RC of Heirisson are desperately seeking a location for the two eye contact storage boxes.  Do you have a warehouse, shed or garage that you are not using and where frequent access is possible?

The boxes are about 2.20 metres long x about 1.20 metres wide x about 1.40 metres high. The boxes are quite heavy but are on wheels and can be pushed around on a smooth hard floor surface quite easily. The storage space would need to be dry.  The boxes are transported on a trailer, therefore, it would be good to just be able to back the trailer up to the boxes.  Ideally it would be better if the storage shed was in the central metro area rather than too far out in the ‘burbs’.  Please contact PDG Graham Peden if you can help.  Graham@wwperth.com

DISTRICT & OTHER CLUB EVENTS YOU MAY LIKE TO ATTEND

Heirisson Rotary Club | “Give A Feed” is a WA wide Rotary initiative providing wholesale Christmas food hampers to vulnerable West Australians struggling to afford enough food to eat.  This year we aim to create 2,500 hampers for families struggling to put Christmas meals on their tables.  The 2020 Rotary launch of “Give A Feed” will be hosted by Heirisson Rotary from 7:30-8:30am on Thursday 12 November in the President’s Room at Gloucester Park in East Perth.

A full breakfast will be provided for $25. Please RSVP by 2 November for breakfast catering purposes. Payments accepted in cash or card via Square. (Alternately, bank transfers are possible to BSB: 066-155, Account # 10465327 with description"GAF-Surname".)

Our guest speaker will be Greg Hebble, CEO of Foodbank WA, who bulk-buy produce and distribute the hampers. Bulk-buying means hampers with retail values two to three times the donation can be created.  "Give a Feed" involves 'wholesale' generosity. It is a fantastic way of encouraging corporate giving. It can be a great Christmas recognition of staff, customers, contractors and suppliers, family and friends. For details on "Give a Feed" or to donate hampers, see: www.giveafeed.com.au
