PERTH ROTARY - PRESIDENTS UPDATE - 29th October 2019

Fellow Rotarians and friends of Perth Rotary,

You may have noticed that I use the word “life-changing” quite often whenever I refer to our Club and our projects. Some may see this as an exaggeration or as a rhetoric expression of enthusiasm.

Life-changing refers to an event, a fact or an experience having an effect that is strong enough to change someone's life.

Last week we had a demonstration of this life-changing experience in all its magnitude through a series of events.

A Diamond is Forever!

PERTH ROTARY - PRESIDENTS UPDATE - 22nd October 2019
Fellow Rotarians and friends of Perth Rotary,

“Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. At room temperature and pressure, another solid form of carbon known as graphite is the chemically stable form, but diamond almost never converts to it. Diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any natural material, properties that are utilised in major industrial applications such as cutting and polishing tools. They are also the reason that diamond anvil cells can subject materials to pressures found deep in the Earth. Diamond also has relatively high optical dispersion (ability to disperse light of different colours). Most natural diamonds have ages between 1 billion and 3.5 billion years. Most were formed at depths between 150 and 250 kilometres (93 and 155 mi) in the Earth's mantle, although a few have come from as deep as 800 kilometres (500 mi). Under high pressure and temperature, carbon-containing fluids dissolved minerals and replaced them with diamonds.“  - Wikipedia

During these economically difficult times, most of us can still manage to have a few niceties in life. Would you consider fresh new underwear or the availability of sanitary products niceties? Well there is a very large group of Western Australians who unfortunately do consider such items as luxury in their daily struggles.

A meeting of Power at Perth Rotary

PERTH ROTARY - PRESIDENTS UPDATE - 8th October 2019
Fellow Rotarians and friends of Perth Rotary,
As we all know very well, Rotary sits above and beyond any political or religious dogma and unites people under the 4 Way Test and the Rotary culture of providing service to those in need. Rotary believes in inclusion, diversion and equality among the people and Perth Rotary demonstrates these principles through its members and their actions.
Under this spectrum, last Friday our Club exemplified its title of the Leading Club by organising a meeting that will be remembered for its impact to the community.

SKA & Fast Radio Bursts
SKA & Fast Radio Bursts

Jean-Pierre Macquart received his PhD in theoretical astrophysics from the University of Sydney in 2000 before embarking for a position at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and then moving to the United States as a Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and at the California Institute of Technology.  He returned to Australia in 2008 to join a fledgling radio astronomy group at Curtin University and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).  Throughout his career he has been interested in some of the most extreme phenomena in the Universe, especially pulsars and supermassive black holes.

He has developed new ways to understand the emission from these enigmatic objects, while creating techniques that use them to eke out the properties of the otherwise elusive matter that their radiation travels through in interstellar and intergalactic space.  Jean-Pierre is a principal investigator of the team that uses the Australian SKA Pathfinder to study the bright millisecond-timescale flashes known as fast radio bursts.  He spends inordinate amounts of time grappling with their baffling properties, and using them as cosmic weigh stations to examine the vast reservoir of matter that exists in between galaxies.
