Iron ore is Australia’s most valuable export. Yet 60 years ago not one tonne of ore was exported. How could this have been?
Peter's presentation explores the origins of the industry which many Australians now take for granted. Yet there was significant opposition to exporting the ore. It was only relaxed after a concerted campaign by key Western Australian leaders.
It’s development required a unique understanding between the various consortiums and the WA Government. Yet this is neither widely known nor appreciated. Some people have become extraordinarily wealthy, thanks to either their inheritance or entrepreneurial zeal, or both.
Peter Kennedy is Perth born and educated. He began his working life as a high school teacher. When Lang Hancock and Peter Wright started their own newspaper in 1969 and recruited heavily from The West Australian, Peter successfully applied for a position on The West. He later worked for The Sydney Morning Herald in Sydney and Canberra before returning to Perth as Press Secretary to then Deputy Premier Malcolm Bryce in 1984.
He joined the ABC in 1990 presenting the Drive and Morning programs on ABC Radio, before becoming the Political Reporter on ABC TV News in 2000.
He retired in 2010, and was appointed an adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame Australia while researching his book Tales from Boom Town – Western Australian Premiers from Brand to McGowan. Peter currently writes the Political Perspective column for Business News.
